OUR BAKERIES

Beyond bread, our bakeries produce opportunity

We currently operate three bakeries in Rwanda, where women earn stable incomes while baking delicious, nutritious baked goods for their communities.

KIGALI, RWANDA

Our flagship bakery

We began training bakers and baking bread in Rwanda’s capital city of Kigali in 2015, and officially opened our first bakery in the Remera district of Kigali in 2018. Customers can pick up takeaway orders of freshly baked goods. Visitors can also book tours to get a firsthand look at how our bakeries operate. Delivery is available on request, with delivery fees depending on locations.

IN HER WORDS

I overcame my biggest fear, which was not having any skills and not being able to be hired anywhere. Now, with six years of
experience, I am a professional baker and proud of it!”

GICUMBI, RWANDA

Our Gicumbi bakery

Our Gicumbi Bakery opened in 2018 above the picturesque rolling hills of Rwanda’s northern province. This area is also home to the Gihembe Refugee Camp, Rwanda’s oldest refugee camp, which is home to some of our bakers. The Gicumbi bakery is currently focused on baking for One Bread Project, providing nutritious, fortified snacks for local schoolchildren.

Expanding through entrepreneurship

The entrepreneurial spirit of our bakers is the driving force behind new opportunities and initiatives at The Women’s Bakery.

Several of our bakers have expressed interest in using what they’ve learned to start their own businesses, so we’ve begun exploring a microfranchise retail model. This would create a new opportunity for local women to sell our products from their own outlets and get our nutritious products to more people in local and rural communities.

Help us grow

We combine revenue from our local bakeries with donor support to create new opportunities for women and expand our impact. Your support can help us grow and bring new ideas to life.
